NORWAY in WW II

My historical novel, The Jøssing Affair, has been a love affair of my own for many years. From the dream of a man lying in the snow surrounded by German soldiers that vision led me into researching a part of WWII history at time no one talking about: Norway and the five year long German occupation and finally, the novel. I pitched it for years, having it place as a finalist in contests, but I could never get anyone interested, so I published it five years ago this spring. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D8XL7PM

It received some wonderful reviews:

In the tantalizing prologue of Oakley’s solid thriller set in 1944 Norway…Oakley effectively recreates a lesser-known chapter of WWII through well-developed characters and suspenseful situations ~Publisher’s Weekly

J. L. Oakley’s rich, satisfyingly atmospheric novel The Jøssing Affair s set in the midst of the Second World War in Nazi-occupied Norway…First-rate WWII-era espionage fiction. ~~Historical Novel Society

It has received a number of awards, including a 2020 Silver Medal from the Military Writers Society of America.

The Quisling Factor

Last summer I published the sequel to Jøssing, The Quisling Factor. It is a finalist in a number of literary contests at this moment. The novel takes up the story a year after the end of the first novel. Norway is in shambles, but they still wanted to restore their justice system and bring to trial the most of the collaborators or quislings. My main characters returned and I am excited that the sequel is getting rave reviews. My favorite:

“(It) is the best wartime thriller I have read in a while! Recommended to readers of Robert Harris, David Gilman and Rory Clements.”~Historical Novel Society

What does this all mean for me, the author? Writing both novels has led me to wonderful friendships in the Norwegian-American communities and in Norway. People want to tell their stories, too, of their families’ times during the occupation. And I appreciate their support by inviting me to speak to their groups on the research behind the novels. I’m on Zoom and if you have a book club that is reading either novel, I’d love to visit.

The Jøssing Affair is now an audio book

I’m starting on a prequel which could be a novella or novel, but my big news is that The Jøssing Affair is now out in audio book form. Last August I did a Kickstarter campaign to raise the money to hire the fabulous Chris Humphreys to narrate it. The work began in October and was finished in February. He just didn’t narrate it, but acted it. He brought the story to life. Now if I could get a six part series going on Netflix.
